Wine of the Week: 2009 Egon Muller 'Kanta' Riesling
We pick up this week's Wine of the Week with a stunning Riesling from a somewhat mixed background. The depth in history behind this winemaker is reflected in the depth of flavour in this drop from the Adelaide Hills, a superb Riesling with a 2009 vintage from Egon Muller.
Carlos has given us the following notes:
"Widely regarded as one of the great winemakers of the world, Egon Muller is a German producer, that dates back to the 18th century, though the relatively new Adelaide Hills descendant proves an old-worldliness that's parallel in quality to its German counterpart. With a similar climate, altitude, and soil, even though these two vineyards are on opposite sides of the world, the wines being churned out of both geographical locations is top notch.
What I like about the Adelaide Hills location, is that it's really an interesting and fun development project for Muller, and this 2009 Kanta is a testament to this - approachable and super versatile.
The 2009 Kanta very much resembles Muller's wines back in Germany, but with a bit of a twist. Sharp, searing and refreshing acidity with plenty of green, tart tree fruits, notes of rhubarb, pannacotta, and underripe tropical fruits like mango and pineapple. The finish is superbly floral without being sickly sweet, and it's this gentle touch of sweetness that makes it the perfect drink to accompany most meals, but particularly fresh seafood - I've had it with Sashimi plenty of times!"
